I enjoyed the Banff park. Yaha tinda is nice too. We have the Rock Lake area up in the Willmore area much similar to the Yaha.

I've never been to Ya Ha, but really would love to go this year, hopefully in the early fall.

We went to whitehorse creek campgrounds last year for a weekend, I wasn't too keen on the lack of trail system out there but the campsite was wonderful. We're hitting Willmore this June for four days, camping and horses... my two fav things combined... It's just heaven :-)

Oh, I should have read up before I replied... lol. Do you have any special advice for any first timers at the Rock Lake/Willmore area? Or pics, pics would be awesome if you have time to post them! We're going this June 12-15th, very much looking forward to this lil get away.

cheers

There was a couple of nice spots out on the Kananaskis, lougheed trail. The strawberry rec area takes you straight back to the rocks. Shark mountain are a is great quite area. Watch for bear seasons, in the Bryant pass, make your way up Allenby pass to ancient sea beds or take a couple of days(one long ride to the B.C. border (a small hike over the border takes you to Assinaboine lodge. Call up the wardens(check in)! Give Holiday on Horseback they may be able to squeeze you in to their half way or Sundance lodges while you ride around to Healy creek(sunshine ski hill) or into Banff. Spend a night then tour up the spray(Banff Springs hotel area) Up the spray back to shark mountain area.

Some links for you.

Does anyone have any pics of their riding adventures away from home?

We're hoping to head to Ya Ha this early fall, just a few of us. I can imagine how beautiful it is there, and LOVE the last river crossing pic. I haven't crossed a river on a horse since I was a kid riding in B.C.

Here's a few Cadomin pics from our trip last year, since we're postin pics :-) The riding there is NOTHING compared to Ya Ha, but the camping experience was absolutely awesome. I apologize for the size of the pics, my photobucket is completely disorganized.

It was May, ground was still pretty brown from winter, up higher in the trails there was still snow. We lucked out tho, other May's have been worse

Fav Riding Destinations Empty Favorit riding areas!

Post  martin stables Wed Apr 08, 2009 11:02 pm

Every year I go out to the mountains 3 times taking colts that I have started and my son!
We have made it a rule never to go to the same spot twice untill we cant find any more places to go!
So yes we have been to alot of differnt places in the mountains and one place that we found last year was Cresent Falls! just west of Nordeg 26km
This was an easy ride there was alot of quads but once you got past were they could go it was unbeliable beautifull country. There is a staging area with 4 differnt pens and 4 good tie ups lots of parking. I guess nobody really goes out there to ride. Was very quiet. Nice place!

Another good group out of Edmonton for you new residents is the ATRA (alberta trail riding association) They do alot of outings all year! they are a really good group!

here's a site for Ya Ha Tinda with some great info and park rules
http://www.pc.gc.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/activ/activ35_E.asp

I LOVE that you can look at the map, and they give descriptions of the trils, and experience level + time for the round trip. Very cool. Not sure about distance to get there though... I was under the impression it was about 5 hours from edmonton, but I could be completely wrong LOL

I am not sure how far the ya ha would be from Calgary, but we are from Vermilion and it takes us, 6-8hrs, the longest stretch is from Sundre (last town) its roughly 60miles SW of there! It used to take a lot longer..The first year we went in we had 23 horses, and 22 riders and we were crossing logs over creeks, it was a very rough drive in..lol..its a lot better now!

Fav Riding Destinations Empty Willmore from Grande Cache

Post  Wapiti Sat Apr 11, 2009 8:52 am

Here are some pics of the Willmore, leaving either from Cowlick Creek staging area or Sulphur Gates. Sulpher Gates has a nice campground and staging area and is a short ride to Kvass Flats, beautiful place and an easy trail ride, only about an hour and a half to the flats and there are trails and camping spots all over. The staging area is great too, nice, steel tube pens with feeders and a round pen. Cowlick creek has i think 8 big tie stalls with feeders and is fenced, it is right across the road from Rocky Mountain Riding Association and we have pens and an arena there. Grande Cache is about 100 km north of the Rock Lake turn off.

WOW, those pics are amazing! Thanks so much for sharing :-))) You know any info on the Rock Lake staging area??

My husbands dad used to take the horses bighorn hunting, they'd take 8 horses up there during winter, four packers and four saddle... I can't beleive the work that goes into such expeditions, but it's fun work I bet.
