Foal injuries

Post  Breanne on Sun May 31, 2009 9:29 pm

Hi everybody,

My 5 week old foal has decided to injure her right hind leg right at the fetlock! I have not taken pictures yet but there is a flap and was not bleeding (yet). I did clean it with iodine diluted with water and put some wound dressing on her leg. She is not quite halter broke yet so it is hard to deal with her. I am going to attempt to hose her in the morning and then to the vets for some advise or meds!

Please let me know any ideas on what to do!

My 5 week old foal got tangled in the only barb wire gate on the perimeter of his 2 acre field...we had to treat his cuts (luckily nothing too serious but quite a few owies). He is not halter broke yet either, so I used a method I read about on Jessica Jaheil's site

The short version is to use about a 10 foot flat braided rope (i used a long lead with no clips), start with the rope near the withers, make one loop around the rump (above the hocks) and the other loop (like a figure eight) around the chest. We tried this as we had to get antibiotic cream on his wounds. We did move him to a stall in case he tried to bolt, but he stood really well.

Good luck with yours.

I just realized I better call my vet and see if he needs a tetnus booster? The mare was boostered 1 month before he was born... but I would hate to not ask the question and be sorry.

Thanks for letting me know I am not the only one who has a curious foal!! Makes me feel better lol!!
As for getting the cream on etc. my baby has decided life is not so bad after all while letting me deal with her! I can hose her, cream the wound, wrap her all by myself...mind you, her mom is a great mom and grooms her while I am doing all this! As for tetnus...my vet gave me penicillian (spelling) to give her 4cc's 2 times a day for 5 days as she does not have her tetnus and moms antibodies are not good enough. I would suggest getting your baby on something as you would not want any serious infection to occure!

Good luck to you and wrap your baby in bubble wrap to keep him safe haha!!
