This is one of my best friend's brand new baby, her name is Padik. She is one day old and out of a AQHA Palomino Stallion and and AQHA Liver Chestnut mare. I think this baby looks Cremello.... is it possible for her to be a cremello with the colors of the two parents? I dont know much about breeding for resulting colors, but for the most part everything I am reading says the baby would have to be chestnut or palomino.

We both know it is a matter of waiting to see over the next few weeks... but, we cant help ourselves from trying to figure it out now! So, color experts..... what is the deal? Palomino or is it possible she could be Cremello?

Palomino.

Cremello and Perlino are DOUBLE dilutes which means the sire and dam both have to be a dilute and each pass on a dilute gene to the foal to be a cremello or perlino. Sire and Dam would have to be either cremello, perlino, palomino, buckskin in order for a foal to be a double dilute.

Palomino:(one creme gene) A sorrel/chestnut horse that recieved one copy of the creme dilition gene from one of its parents, giving it a coat ranging in color from pale cream, to golden, to chocolate and has a white mane and tail.

Sorrel:(base color) (closest to the color of the mare): A Red based horse with no black gene and no dilution gene.

Cremello: (double dilute)A sorrel/chestnut horse that recieved one copy of the creme gene from both of its parents, and has pink skin, blue eyes, cream to nearly white hair coat, and a white mane and tail.

Perlino
: (double dilute)A Bay horse that recieved one copy of the creme gene from both of its parents, and has pink skin, blue eyes, a cream to white colored coat and a darker mane and tail (often orange or red tinted

Hi Gallamist,

Thanks for your response. We have read all the same information. Everything says this baby has to be palomino.... but she has blue eyes, is pink skinned and is such a light creamy color, that it is confusing.

Cute little baby. First thing to remeber is a double cream must get a cream gene from each parent to get a double cream foal. If the parent are both double creams, 100% double cream foals, if both parents are single cream carriers they could each pass on their cream gene. A single cream parent doesn`t always have to pass on the cream gene either.
Now in saying, it is not unusually for even smoky black foals to be born with pink skin and blue eyes. Your friend may even want to check for the Pearl gene. A single pearl gene has no effect on color in single form but if crossed with a cream and a horse has one copy of the cream gene and one copy of the pearl gene you can have a foal that will look just like a double cream even at maturity with pink skin, pale eyes. : )

Are the eyes a dark dark blue or a pale bright kinda blue?

I want to say foals are born with blueish eyes but, it's been so long since I had a foal that I can't remember ever looking at eye color at birth....lol

Thank you so much Swancreek,

I passed on the information about the pearl gene. I will see the filly in question myself, in three weeks. My friend tells me her eyes are blue, but I didnt ask what shade of blue.

based on looks alone, looks Palamino to me. Why complicate it? lol

No but it doesn't look washed out enough to be Perlino/cremello to me. Just based on the few pics.

The mare is very pretty, and well bred, but she a lot of attitude and is very strong willed. The dad is "Precision Instrument". I havent heard of him, dont know what he is like and I havent seen pictures, but hopefully baby has also inherited an easier going temperament!

Thanks to all who responded, I will post some pictures of her after my trip to Calgary.
